“The nine circles of Hell”

Introduction:

From the foundation of the International Errorist, an organization in which Etcetera… collective is part; we use different invitations to participate in exhibitions and biennials to disseminate the ideas and actions of this movement. The “Philosophy of Error” has addressed thus our latest creations  (for example, “El Plan del Error”, LaNormalidad / ExArgentina, 2007,“We Are All Errorist ” Taipei Biennial 2008 or “The Errorist Kabaret” at the 11 Istanbul Biennial , 2009). Since 2007 we started working on a sort of dramatic dynamics in the art installation , where theatrical atmospheres and also leads to the possibility of creating another show, a new narrative in which puppets, characters, objects and audience form a wandering errorist lyric. In this occasion, for the Artist in Residency Show exhibition at the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation we decide to develop a new installation project inspired on “La Divina Commedia”, written

by Dante Alighieri, is widely considered the central poem of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. That will be the first part of a trilogy as the Commedia It is divided into three parts, the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.

The poem’s imaginative and allegorical vision of the Christian afterlife is a culmination of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church. The Divine Comedy has been a source of inspiration for countless artists for almost seven centuries , for us is another opportunity for interpretation and associations about the contemporary life.

“Each sin’s punishment in Inferno is a contrapasso, a symbolic instance of poetic justice; for example, fortune-tellers have to walk with their heads on backwards, unable to see what is ahead, because that was what they had tried to do in life: Allegorically, the Inferno represents the Christian soul seeing sin for what it really is, and the three beasts represent three types of sin: the self-indulgent, the violent, and the malicious. These three types of sin also provide the three main divisions of Dante’s Hell: Upper Hell (the first 5 Circles) for the self-indulgent sins; Circles 6 and 7 for the violent sins; and Circles 8 and 9 for the malicious sins.” wikipedia

The structure of the installation is organized following the concept of the cantos, and is composed with diverse works hanging wall, ceilings, floors and walkways. Some walls or spaces shall be painted in red and black. The figures and characters in dialogue with each other, shouting down from the staircases are hung from the roofs flying, and even sleep. Images as references to the Inferno of the Divine Comedy mixed with our own contemporary imaginaries as an oscillatory way of narrating the events that unfolded in the world after the fall of the Twin Towers on 11 September 2001 or particularly in after the international economiccrisis suffered in 2008. All this issues crossed by the ideas around the (t)error and errorism.

Characters / Script

A multitude of subjects on the scene, the place where they live course the traitors in the last circle. A demon with a thousand heads and desires that are deposited into an imaginary space. Torture and terror penetrate this place, those exiles that live underground and are suspicious of the sky. A place where the disaster progresses, it moves all with a logic contaminating scattered in all areas in the nine circles of a pointed cone: TERROR!

The nine circles of the “Inferno Errorifico” are ruinous and awful terrifying cartography of a becoming.

The first five circles are the Upper Hell: “Lobby: the entrance to the Hell” , “Thought Medium“, “The Wrath of the children” , “The Errorist Errors”, ” Theatre of Nightmares”.

The three penultimate are lower Hell: “The Great Buildings“, “The Traitors” , “Mr. Money.” The latest is “The eternal city of mosques, surrounded by walls of iron.”

As with any catastrophic times, the action disappears and it’s time to hang on the pendulum head observe the order of a reality which progresses vertically.

Overture:

From the sky fallen angels trumpets are suspended pendulums with current thinking, error, error and more error.

Pendulum Man: (Continue in conversation with the Marx/Angel) -…“It was an error”, the police justified themselves.

Marx/Angel -In the so called “Global War against (t)errorism” everything is allowed: devastating homes, religious cults, torture and humiliate.

Assassinating somebody for “the appearance of the face”: Shoot and shout ¡Stop! later on

Pendulum Man: -¿Then… any person can be (t)errorist?

Marx/Angel -¡Yes, in order to create an image later!

Pendulum Man: The concept of “(t)errorism” constructs an identity and a stereotype of the “(t)errorist enemy”, which gives visibility to the delict of being “suspicious of everything”. You what do you think?

Marx/Angel 1: – If any injury to property, without difference, without more precise identification is stolen, would not all private property theft?

In the midst of all the fires: the fire

The Duomo lies under the eternal city of mosques. Skulls as ritual surrounding the body of Il Cavallieri, hanging over his head while the circle of thinker’s mediums, those witches… Sound like thunder and gunfire, smoke alarm of fire is the beginning and end. Amid a great show of the old world: overlooking the star of a circus of nine circles.

The Contortionist: – -The first phase of the domination of the economy over social life brought into the definition of all human realization the obvious degradation of being into having. The present phase of total occupation of social life by the accumulated results of the economy leads to a generalized sliding of having into appearing, from which all actual “having” must draw its immediate prestige and its ultimate function. At the same time all individual reality has become social reality directly dependent on social power and shaped by it. It is allowed to appear only to the extent that it is not.

Faced with a scene from the theatrical circle … there is a feminist witch, accompanies the crocodile pataphysical, rests at his feet. This witch speaks through the nose into a fluid dialogue with the beautiful creature that accompanies the entrance to erroriric hell.

-Feminist Witch: -On the contrary, our action does not seek the soul or further than the convicted man but it aims to erase the deep frontier between innocence and guilt.

Lutembi, the crocodile: – €?.

-Feminist Witch – We read what we must not. We touch what we cannot. We do what we want!

The four Indian witches (singing in chorus) -Discourse is not simply that which translates struggles or systems of domination, but is the thing for which and by which there is struggle, discourse is the power which is to be seized

The jellyfish -But certainly for the present age… which prefers the sign to the thing signified, the copy to the original, fancy to reality, the appearance to the essence… this change, inasmuch as it does away with illusion, is an absolute annihilation, or at least a reckless profanation; for in these days illusion only is sacred, truth profane. Nay, sacredness is held to be enhanced in proportion as truth decreases and illusion increases, so that the highest degree of illusion comes to be the highest degree of sacredness.

The clown: And without any doubt our time prefer the image to the object, copying the original, representation to reality, appearance to be…what is sacred to him is nothing but illusion, and what is profane is the truth. Rather, the sacred in their eyes is enhanced with decreasing the truth and the illusion grows, to the point that the greatest illusion is also sacred.

The Satyr announces: -While flashes and fine perfumes, poke their eyes silent symbol of other cultural hell, we celebrate the birth of a new error. On one side of this catacomb is timidly poking a flag on the Parthenon: spiders, horses, jellyfish and witches celebrate the fall of another arena: the Euro.
